NWT - Dall Sheep, Caribou

We offer hunts for Dall Sheep, Mountain Caribou, and Alaska/Yukon Moose. Wolf and Wolverine can also be harvested as available.

For the Dall Sheep and Dall Sheep/Caribou combination hunts, 44 outpost sheep camps are used. These camps are situated along eight major rivers and numerous creeks throughout the area. Many of these camps are used one season every 2 to 5 years. This helps insure excellent hunting and good numbers of quality animals available.

From base camp, hunters travel by horseback, riverboat, or helicopter to the outpost camps. Sheep camps consist of hunter tents, guide tents, and a kitchen wall tent. From these camps, each hunter and their guide travel to different locations to hunt. On all hunts, guides carry a satellite phone or radio for communications if needed.

The last Wildlife Advisory Board survey estimated the Dall Sheep population in this area at approximately 2,000 to 3,200 young rams, ewes, and lambs. There was an estimated 600 to 700 rams 7 years and older in this hunting area. Hunters should expect to see 4 to 10 full curl rams during their hunt.

While sheep hunting you will also see numerous bunches of caribou, and an occasional wolf or wolverine. Caribou bulls will be in the velvet until late August. You will also see some non-hunted species such as grizzly bears, black bears, eagles, water fowl, and small game during your hunt.

After the sheep and sheep/caribou combination hunts are done for the season, we hunt caribou out of the main base camp at Hay Hook Lake. In the later part of September, caribou herds ranging from 4,000 to 15,000 migrate to the flats above Hook Lake. These flats run from 5 miles wide to 25 miles long. There is also a large mineral lick 4 ½ miles from camp which draws caribou from the surrounding area.

You will see large numbers of caribou during these hunts. Horses and packhorses are taken out daily. Much of the hunting day is spent glassing groups of bulls, trying to pick out the best animal. Caribou bulls will be in the hard horn during these hunts. Some wolves are taken on these hunts also.

While hunting caribou, some hunters also take the opportunity to hunt the moose around base camp. For more detailed moose hunting, we travel out by helicopter and/or riverboat.

Both Hay Hook Lake and Dall Lake offer excellent fishing for arctic grayling and lake trout. Many of the major rivers and creeks are also known for their exceptional fishing opportunities. The caribou hunts are very relaxing, and many non-hunters come along to fish, watch the caribou, and enjoy base camp.

On All Hunts - We provide all camps, equipment, food, guides, stock, tack, and accommodations while you are hunting. We also prepare all heads, capes, and hides for the taxidermists.

You will need to bring your personal effects, sleeping bag, binoculars, rifle, ammunition, boots, and clothing. You will also be responsible for license fees, government trophy fees and funds, Canadian GST Tax, air charter to and from base camp, motel rooms and meals in Norman Wells, and any unscheduled charter flights.

This hunt holds a 95% to 100% success rate on all game each season. The guides will make your experience in the Mackenzie Mountains, NWT an enjoyable and successful one. As professional hunters, our motto is COMFORT, SAFETY, and SUCCESS!
